Airheads “You caught my heart” Cupcake toppers

Airhead cupcake toppers

In a sea of Airheads, you caught my heart!

I recently discovered the Blogger’s Valentine’s Day Craft Contest sponsored by Airheads Candy. I thought it was such a cute idea, and I have used Airheads for cupcake decorations before! They are really pliable and sticky, they hold a great shape and can easily be molded.

These cupcake toppers are simple to put together and they don’t require any special tools. You can make whatever shape you want if you have the proper cookie cutter!

Here is a list of items you will need:

  • Airheads bars (makes 3 hearts per bar)
  • Cupcake and frosting of your choice
  • Scissors
  • Twine or string
  • Lollipop sticks
  • Paper straws (optional)
  • Small heart shaped cookie cutter
  • Wax Paper
  • Rolling pin

Using your lollipop stick and twine,  tie a few knots on one end; cut excess thread. I suggest you not cut the lollipop stick until you are ready to put it in your cupcake, that way you can choose the height you want it to be on your cupcake.

Place an airhead between two sheets of wax paper and use a rolling pin to flatten it out. Be sure to roll both horizontally and vertically to stretch the airhead.

Use your cookie cutter to cut your desired shape. You will need to apply some pressure, so you might want to use a glove or something on your hand. It is also helpful if you turn the Airhead over and gently press from the other side.

Place the string on the back of your shape. Take a second, smaller piece of Airhead and roll it into a ball. You will use this to help adhere the string to the back of the Airhead as shown below. Flatten out the piece you are using for the backing and cut the excess string.

You are almost there!

This next step is optional, but I think it is so cute. I wanted to add polka dots to my hearts. I took a piece of Airhead and flattened it out. I took a Wilton size 5 tip and used it to cut small circles. If you don’t have one of these, you can certainly cut small pieces and roll them into little balls. Press onto the front of your heart.

Next, you will want to cut your lollipop stick to your desired length. If you have paper straws, cut them a little bit shorter than your lollipop sticks.

To finish you cupcake, place your stick into your frosted cupcake. Have fun and be creative! Here are some photos of the finished product! I hope you like them. If you do, please head over the their Facebook page and vote for me!
